My first blog. It may be my only blog, it may be the start of something... who knows?
One of the most frequent questions I am asked is "can you paint my Chrome camera black?". The next one is often "can you strip the chrome and will it wear and brass?".
My answer is always yes to both. There is reassurance in the familiar.
However, as a painter, I have a love for colour and a desire to brighten things up a little.
I therefore decided, since I have been building a healthy turnover of varied Cerakote cameras in blacks, greys, brown and olive tones, I would embark on something more adventurous. The results are below. A Canon 7 and a VI-L.
The 7 has been named by Chris Andreyo of Skyllaney Optomechanics the 'Cadbury Canon' and has been treated to a gold base coat with black metallic fades on the edges before being overlaid with four coats of candy brown courtesy of Custom Paints Inc. 2 coats of 2k polyurethane clear coat finish the top and bottom plates. A custom matched 50mm f1.8 Serenar is being rebuilt as we speak. All the levers, dials, screws and shutter button have been refinished in Cerakote Burnt Bronze H-Series ceramic coating.
The VI-L has been finished in Candy Orange fading to Candy Cherry Red over gold base and a custom decal applied beneath the clear coat with its title 'Sunburst Supernova'. Components refinished in gloss black Cerakote and this is having a colour matched Sonnar lens rebuilt by Chris. By the way, if you want lens servicing, convertions to M Mount including rf coupling and electronic 'doo daadery' the Chris is the guy.
So, I am happy to repaint folk's cameras and whatever else they want refinishing in any colour they want. And black is always cool. But... if we are going to do this, and we are doing it once to something that is a treasure of ours, why not dream a little?
